As the cool kids say, It’s been a minute since I’ve posted. If you’ve seen me as a patient, you know that I’m still breathing and working with no intention of stopping. It was time to clarify why I’d paused and what’s coming down the pike.
These past months, a close family member’s been in and out of the hospital every few weeks. Every spare moment has been about adjusting to the new realities, as well as the related emotions. My father used to say, when discussing the meaning and purpose of life, “Meaning? Purpose? There’s no meaning! You work, you get old, you die, that’s it!” — in other words, the thing is plain; it is what it is without commentary. This year has been about shutting up and taking care of business, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t extract some meaning and pass it along.
(Spoiler: no midlife crisis. There’s no shiny motorcycle in the driveway, no journey to Nepal, and no young devotee. Just puppies.)
I’m entering my sixth decade in my mortal coil, so the pressings from this experience are less fruity and more tangy.
Marcelo Garcia, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and teacher referred to as the GOAT, said something particularly profound, when discussing his attitude change after he recovered from stomach cancer (talk about being a badass). “Live each moment like it’s your last” is a common take home, but that’s exhausting. Living for and enjoying each day is more doable, and what he settled upon.
Less bright lights and exotic locales on TikTok, and more selecting what’s important and executing.
If travel and extreme sports and young devotees are where you need to be right now, then set up an appointment. And let’s try to make sure you don’t catch anything besides fish.
